I found Bonvenon Capsule Hostel to be the best hostel in Yerevan thanks to its excellent location just a five-minute walk from Cascade, its comfortable and large capsule beds, its cleanliness and the welcoming host, Jack.

This is not a party hostel and is an excellent place if you’re looking for somewhere quiet, comfortable and laid back. There is a small kitchen with free tea and coffee, two bathrooms, a desk and a couple of sofas. There is also a small courtyard out the back which acts as a pleasant sun trap.

I stayed many times at Bonvenon and will return there when I head back to Yerevan in a few weeks. It’s a little more expensive than some of the other options, but the quality is worth it, and it’s still very reasonable. Click here to check availability.

Metro is another excellent backpacker hostel in central Yerevan with clean and modern rooms, helpful staff and a fantastic location. It’s a small hostel, but there are sofas for relaxing and an outside seating area with tables and chairs.

I stayed here for a few days towards the end of my last trip to Armenia and it definitely stood out as one of the best Yerevan hostels. There are lots of restaurants just a few minutes walk away from KFC and Mr Gyros to the excellent Genatsvale Isahakyan Georgian restaurant.

I struggled to find the hostel as it’s listed as being on the main Abovyan Street, but it’s actually behind the street rather than facing outwards. Just head down the small road next to the bakery and turn right. It’s just a two-minute walk from the nearest metro.

Pros

  • Cheap
  • Clean
  • Central location

Cons

  • Difficult to find

Center Hostel Yerevan is located around the corner from Republic Square just off Vardanants Street and a two-minute walk from Republic Square metro station (though about 20 minutes fom Tumanyan/Cascade etc).

It’s a homely, small hostel that’s clean and comfortable. There is a common area with a sofa, a small kitchen with a table and chairs, and the rooms have bunk beds and lockers.

The staff are helpful and speak English and Russian. There is a great café, Impresso, across the street which makes great breakfasts and is a good place to work (the WiFi in the hostel isn’t great).

There is also a one-bedroom private apartment run by the owners and I also stayed there for a few days. This is one of the cheapest hostels in Yerevan and definitely a great budget option.

Pros

  • Cheap
  • Decent location

Cons

  • The building is a little dated and could use an upgrade

5. Classy & Cozy Hostel (Cheapest Hostel in Yerevan)

Address: Rustaveli St, Yerevan 0002, Armenia. Click here for directions.
Nearest metro: Marshall Baghramyan
Types of room available: mixed dorms, doubles, twin
Check-In Time:
Check-Out Time:
Average cost per night: $5

I spent a few weeks on and off living at this excellent little hostel located a five-minute walk from Mesrop Mashots Avenue and 15 minutes from Cascade.

The hostel benefits from a kitchen with cooking facilities and a washing machine. Upstairs there is a small balcony and there is a large courtyard downstairs where you can hang out, drink beer and chat to other guests.

For travellers on a tight budget, this is definitely the best hostel in Yerevan thanks to its price and excellent location close to the centre.

Pros

  • Very cheap
  • Decent location

Cons

  • Have to walk up a big hill to get there

6. Kantar Hostel Yerevan

Address: 10 Deghatan St, Yerevan 0010, Armenia. Click here for directions.
Nearest metro: Republic Square
Types of room available: Dorms, doubles, singles
Check-In Time:
Check-Out Time:
Average cost per night: $24

Kantar Hostel is located to the south of the city centre and is one of the most popular places to stay in Yerevan. It’s newly refurbished with a sleek interior and benefits from a cozy common room, a fully equipped kitchen and balconies with stunning city views.

This hostel is slightly more expensive than some of the others, but worth every penny (and still much cheaper than in Western Europe).

Pros

  • Recently renovated
  • Good location
  • Excellent views

Cons

  • More expensive than most

7. Puzzle Space

Address: 90/10 Charents St, Yerevan 0025. Click here for directions.
Nearest metro: Republic Square
Types of room available: Dorms
Check-In Time: 14:00
Check-Out Time: 12:00
Average cost per night: $14

I stayed for a week at Puzzle Space on my return to Yerevan in summer 2023. It is the only hostel with a pool in the city and a great place to cool off in summer. The rooms are standard 8-bed male and female dorms with comfortable beds and power supplies for each bunk.

There’s a small kitchen with a fridge, gas hob and washing machine that’s free to use. There’s also a communal space upstairs and balconies with decent views of the city.

There is a cafe downstairs selling a range of hot and cold dishes (a little pricy, but convenient) and a bar next to the pool. There’s a good vibe (in summer at least) and it’s an excellent overall choice.

The main drawback is that it’s not super central, however, you can walk to the city centre and Cascade in around 30 minutes. Oh, and the WiFi is shit (same everywhere)!

Pros

  • Reasonable price
  • Outdoor swimming pool
  • Free washing

Cons

  • Crap WiFI
  • A little far from the centre

Lake Sevan
Majestic Lake Sevan in Armenia

8. Sevan Hostel

Lake Sevan is a must-visit when in Armenia thanks to its gorgeous views, ancient monasteries, hiking and swimming in summer. I stayed at Sevan Hostel for a week and highly recommend it.

There is one large dorm with a mix of capsule-style beds and bunk beds. When I stayed in March 2023 I had the entire room to myself most of the time (it was still out of season and snowy then).

The hostel has a small kitchen with a fridge, hot plate and tea and coffee-making facilities. There is a washing machine, a dining table and a pleasant patio outside with sunroof and seating.

Address: Sargis Sevanatsi Street 17, Sevan 1501, Armenia. Click here for directions.
How to get there: There are daily marshrutkas from Yerevan North bus station. The journey time is around two hours.
Types of room available: Dormitory
Average cost per night: $20

Yerevan Hostels to Avoid

I don’t really like to leave negative reviews, but I didn’t enjoy my time at the following two places and should just make you aware of the issues I had:

Hostel Tumanyan: I’m pretty sure there were bedbugs here, but it could have been mosquitos. They tried charging me after I’d paid, and the vibe wasn’t great. Some useless trivia: I was interviewed live on BBC Television news late one night from the hostel kitchen here about some developments in China.

Maria Hostel: Although a decent location, and maybe fine as a hostel, I booked a single, private room and it had a door with a glass window and a small sheet of paper that could be seen through. It was definitely not private and didn’t feel too safe.

Best Bars in Yerevan

It’s no secret that many backpackers, myself included, love to party and enjoy a few drinks in the evening. So you’ll be pleased to know Yerevan has an excellent selection of bars across the city. Here are some of my favourites:

  • Rock’n’rolla – My favourite bar not only n Yerevan, but anywhere. Cheers Rudy!
  • The Beatles Pub – A great selection of drinks and an excellent food menu.
  • Dargett Brewpub – Yerevan’s best craft beer bar.

Cool Coffee Shops in Yerevan

I loved working from some of the wonderful coffee shops across the city. Here are my two top choices:

Keerk & Co – A wonderful little cafe tucked behind a busy street with both inside and outside seating and workspace

The Green Bean – An excellent cafe with a reasonable lunch and breakfast menu right next to Cascade.

Top Things to Do in Yerevan

There’s plenty to do in and around Yerevan from climbing the Cascade to enjoying the many streetside cafes, walking around Republic Square or Victory Park to taking a day trip to nearby places of interest such as Garni Temple, Khor Virap or Lake Sevan.

Here are a few of my favourite things to do in the city:

  • Climb the Cascade
  • See Republic Square
  • People watch from one of the many cafes
  • Check out the many Orthodox churches across the city
  • Visit the Ararat brandy factory
  • See the Genocide Memorial
  • See the impressive Garni Temple
